The PLAN Liaoning is the initial Chinese aircraft carrier deployed by the People's Liberation Army Naval Surface Force. Liaoning is officially considered a training vessel as the Navy familiarizes its sailors with carrier operations. Commissioned in 1985 as the Soviet carrier Varyag, she was eventually delivered to the Chinese in 1998. CV-16 Liaoning joined the PLAN in September of 2012.
