Jacques Lowe's photographs of the Kennedys, taken during his tenure as JFK's personal photographer, have become the iconic imagery of a time that remains vividly etched in the national psyche. Upon Lowe's death, commentators credited his pictures with creating the myth of camelot. Of Lowe's forty thousand Kennedy photographs, only a few have ever been seen, and all of his negatives, which were housed in a vault in the World Trade Center, were destroyed on September 11, 2001. For this definitive book, fine reproductions have been created from existing prints and contact sheets - in some cases of images he never even printed. Authorised by the Lowe estate, Remebering JFK features more than six hundred pictures, half of which are previously unpublished. Published to coincide with the fortieth anniversary of President Kennedy's death, Remebering JFK includes a tribute by Lowe's closest friend Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Thomasina Lowe chronicles the loss of her father's negatives. Author and journalist Hugh Sidey, a Kennedy expert whose vivd prose deepens our experince of the photographs, has written the introduction and commentary throughout. The book concludes with an appreciation by Tom Wolfe, Lowe's friend and photo subject for forty years. The focus, however, remains on the pictures - a poignant evocation of the charm, youth, high spirits, and legend of the Kennedys, all tinged with a sense of loss.
